Floppy hats and travel

Floppy hats and travel

Traveling with a cute hat is much easier than it looks - carrying it with you at the airport, that’s a pain, but packing it away makes life so much easier. There are many types of hats that are packable, the one that I have is just flimsy enough that it can roll, and sturdy enough that it won’t crease. Here’s how easy it is to roll:

Then I just pack this is in my backpack and make sure it doesn’t get too squished. Once we arrive at our destination, I unfolded to prevent more damage from having rolled it to begin with.

Tips for identifying a good rollable hat:

  • Material - generally fabric hats are easy to pack like fisherman hats, or newspaper boy (those are so cute too!) but many of these don’t have big bills which are nice when going to places with a lot of sun. Look for a hat that is not too thick and you’ll most likely be able to roll it.

  • Roll it up gently to test out if it’ll hold it’s form once unrolled.

  • To be good it doesn’t have to be expensive - we bought this one for USD $3, in Colombia, March 2018 and it’s still going strong. The photo in the left was taken in Belize, March 2018 and the one on the right in Vietnam, February 2019.
